Imperial College London learns the benefits of Safetrak
Imperial College London is situated on over 0.5 million m2 of built space – roughly equivalent to three Canary Wharfs. Therefore, maintaining a centrally-based facilities management system is a complex task, requiring meticulous methods of updating and control. As a result, the computerised Safetrak system has proven to be a method of organised, trackable inspections, with instant access to equipment information and reports in a paperless format.
The Safetrak system uses three components - handheld devices, specially designed software, and electronically chipped Scafftag status tagging systems embedded. Imperial College uses Safetrak in conjunction with the Laddertag™ system to help ensure that the several hundred ladders on site are regularly and systematically inspected for safety and maintenance. Therefore, the College is quickly aware of any ladders that are in need of repair, out of service, or if any have been mislaid – crucial with such large stocks of equipment.
Ian Gillett, the College’s Safety Director, saw that the Safetrak system would be ideal for his ladder management needs. “Safetrak helps us manage our ladders which cover several areas of the College. The hand-held device is easy to use, and information is downloaded onto computer records for instant access – faults or issues are instantly displayed in the reports, meaning we can action maintenance or replacement requirements swiftly.
“The system is highly efficient, and as a cost-effective solution to our needs here, we hope to roll it out across the site for other applications, too.”
