Published 31 March, the quarterly fatal injury figures for the period Apr-Dec 2008 provide one indication of the possible outturn for deaths to workers and members of the public in the workplace in 2008/09.
The figure of 137 fatal injuries to workers at this nine-month stage is substantially below the comparable figure for 2007/08, which was 163 (i.e. a drop of 16%), and the average figure for the last four years, which was 173. Given the size of the decrease, additional checks are underway to ensure that figures are being compared on a like-for-like basis at this intermediate stage. Annual figures are within natural year-on-year variation.
